Hey folks, here's something else expensive which you can spend money on instead of saving for a good shakuhachi or taking lessons!
Komuso sneaks up on the Samurai with a sepulchral sound of a Shakuhachi. He is a hatchet man who is going to kill the Samurai when he is brushing past him. He must put a Samurai in lurch with his acrid and plaintive blank face.

I do believe that that is the worlds' SMALLEST shakuhachi! What is that, a 0.01?

While we are on topic of komuso monks killing samurai, has anyone here seen the anime version of Ninja Scroll? Here are few screen shots of one particular episode.
This is our villain:
His shakuhachi seems to have a rather wide bore. Well, at least it seems to have a fairly wide root-end.
I'll just go ahead and spoil the scene for you. This guy has mastered the art of playing shakuhachi while holding a ton of long needles in your mouth. After you demonstrate this those traditional players have nothing on you. Warning, could be fatal.
As a more serious note, I'm positively surprised that not only did they have a character like that but he was also fairly authentic as far as these things go. He actually plays what sounds like a real honkyoku to me. The melody didn't ring a bell but I could post a copy of the short clip here and someone could tell me what it is. It sounds really nice and I'd love to learn it one day. Odds are that it's some well known piece that I just haven't heard or didn't make the connection in my head. If anyone has seen this particular scene before and call tell me what the piece is, well, that just saves me the time of posting it here.

That is certainly the most authentic depiction of a Ninja Komuso Mummy I have ever seen.
I'd like to see him face off against Elvis and JFK in a sequel to Bubba Ho-Tep.
