Yamaguchi Shugetsu shakuhachi making video!!!

Hi all,

here is a link to master maker Yamaguchi Shugetsu's video about shakuhachi making!
Its a long video of almost 40minutes and over 400mb! So be patient to download it.
Yamaguchi is famous of his jinashi making skills. A lot of famous players like yokoyama used his shakuhachi. He was a student of chikuzen.

Its in japanese, but I think its either way interesting to see and hear sensei Yamaguchi explain how he makes shakuhachi. You can see him drilling finger holes and explain about tuning etc. You can also see him play shika no tone with another player.
Its also exciting to see his workshop in his house with a LOT of bamboo and shaku's!

Here is the link:

Enjoy!

...Just wondering if this video was for real and if anyone has seen it.  This thread got no responses so I thought the link might be a virus or something...

Ken2t did warn us that the file was big. A huge Windows Media file. Almost 1/2 GB. It's there ... I think. It may take a long time to download though.

About 25 minutes on my middlin'-fast Comcast cable connection.

It's not actually a 'shakuhachi making' video, per se. Rather, it's about a visit to Shugetsu's shop by two interested friends (one's a pretty good player, the other doesn't play on the video, and appears to be naive about the shakuhachi, so the player fills him in on all the relevant details). Shugetsu shows them lots of shakuhachi, does a bit of this and that, and the hole he drills is to produce a seven hole flute. The playing is quite decent, and it's worth it just to see all those yummy flutes in his small shop, plus a pile of glorious hand-picked culms.

Re: Yamaguchi Shugetsu shakuhachi making video!!!

The film was made as a project at Osaka University of Arts and is about making ji-nuri shakuhachi. Dr. Simura Satosi uses it to show in his classes some times. He showed it while I was there in his class on fieldwork.
Simura explained to me that it is not often makers are as open about their making techniques as Shugetsu and appreciated his openness and willingness to show and demonstrate the steps in the ji-nuri making process. Shugetsu shows for example his own personal way to add ji and explains why he finds it easier to apply it like this etc.
It is well-worth the long wait to download and watch.
Although Shugetsu now is more known as a ji'nashi maker, he was trained as a jinuri maker and he still makes both kinko and tozan flutes.

I was not able to download it because I have a Mac. Shugetsu is one of the best makers around nowadays and anything he has to offer about jinashi or jinuri is worth paying attention to.

Thanks all...I downloaded it and it was definitely worth the wait!  I feel very honored to peek into the workshop of such a fine craftsman.  I wish there were english subtitles though.

I downloaded it to my Mac, and I have been able to open it with QuickTime (using the Flip4Mac WMV plug-in); VLC and an old version of WMP also worked. Go for it.

I still need to make time to actually watch it, though.

Thanks, Ed already sent me the link for Flip4. Haven't tried it yet.
