Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2008 30thAug - 2ndSept

Hello dear shakuhachi friends,

The next years Summer School will be a very special event because we have managed to persuade one of the Japans very top contemporary performers on shakuhachi, who seldom visits such events...

Kifu Mitsuhashi! a master of Kinko and Meian tradition, a member of sterling ensamble Pro Musica Nipponia.

Kifu Mitsuhashi as well as Christopher Yohmei Blasdel and Vlastislav Matousek will be available also for individual lessons during the Summer School with no extra payment needed.

You can read more about the teachers on www.komuso.com

As we are still working on the programm and pieces to be taught, I can only disclose to you that next year(2008) the renowned morning yoga classes with Ajay Bobade, the shakuhachi lessons AND the evening concerts will be held all under one roof in spacious, well equipped and historical environment within Prague city centre.

We will also give a HUGE discount to those booking longer time in advance, so please tick 30th August - 2nd September 2008 in your calendars already. It will be worth it.

Stay tuned for more info, or mail me directly to mmardias@hotmail.com

Your,

Marek Matvija

It was Kifu's work that got me into shakuhachi.  Very amazing music.

Re: Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2008 30thAug - 2ndSept

Dear shakuhachi makers and scholars,

With the Prague Shakuhachi Summer School being the only European event that hosts masters from Japan this year. We are expecting plenty of people to show up.

It might be a good idea to come to Prague to present your flutes, in order to receive recognition and reference from the great players(if not the deals themselves). It would be nice to know more about European makers. If you are considering comming please let me know soon, so we can add you to the Summer School's portfolio and discuss how much space and what facilities you would prefer to have.

Similar thing goes to scholars.
Do you have a topic to hold a lecture about? Splendid.
Is it at least loosely bound to shakuhachi or Contemporary/Traditional japanese culture? Great!
Let us know what it is and what do you need to present it. We can grant you a challenging audience and a discount on the fee.

Together we will create a wonderful event.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours,

Marek Matvija

Re: Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2008 30thAug - 2ndSept

Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2008
30.08.-02.09.2008

The only event in Europe in Summer 2008 that will host shakuhachi masters from Japan.

THE SUMMARY:

Teachers:

Kifu Mitsuhashi: member of Pro Musica Nipponia ensamble, one of the most respected players regarding both, contemporary and traditional shakuhachi music, player of Kinko and Fuke style
Christopher Blasdel: especially recognized for his interpretaions of Kinko honkyoku, his main teacher was living national treasure Yamaguchi Goro(Chikuyusha school), he also studied Fuke style with Okamoto Chikugai
Vlastislav MatouĊĦek: art-music composer, shakuhachi player and scholar, student of Kifu Mitsuhashi, head of Etnomusicology at HAMU(faculty of Music at the Academy of Musical Arts)

Each teacher will teach one group lesson a day focusing on a single honkyoku piece throughout the four days of the summer school. That will enable the teacher to go into details of the particular piece. Moreover, it will give him plenty of time to give numerous individual and small group consultations. These consultations will be arranged and scheduled in the morning student-teacher meeting.
This is a unique opportunity to have such sterling players focusing on your specific problems/inquiries, be it sound production or the main theme of Tsuru No Sugomori. To ensure individual approach to each student there needs to be a set limit to the number of participants(precise number will be specified in upcoming weeks; probably around thirty).

Each day, the program will start early with yoga excercises lead by a fine yoga teacher from India, Ajay Bobade. These will focus on needful techniques for the shakuhachi. Last year's high attendance and overall high praise has proven value of these lessons.

Prague Shakuhachi Summer School will offer high profile lectures to its participants as an enhancement of their musical experience. Shakuhachi scholars, members of academic circles, will give lectures on their fields of expertise. Moreover, there will be a small bibliotheque of shakuhachi related texts and videos.
We find this part of the Summer School's program very important as it makes one's involvement with the instrument more complex.

Teaching language will be English, assistance can arranged, please inquire.

There will be four concerts in the evenings, including a student concert and a concert that will feature shakuhachi and contemporary dance. More info about the concerts comming soon.

All lectures, concerts and classes will be held under one single roof. Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2008 will be held at site of the New Town town-hall. Built in 1354 AD, this building offers few concert venues, plenty of rooms, as well as, truly charming atmosphere. It is located in the very Prague city centre.
Along with the Summer School's main programme participants will be also able to take part in tea rituals and visit an exhibition held in the town-hall's tower.

The size of the fee for the Summer School will be around 175euro(+ - 25euro), given that there will be a tremendous discount for those booking long time in advance.
The price will include the group and individual lessons, lectures and access to the bibliotheque and concerts. It will not include accommodation and daily meals. However, being set in the city centre there are numerous possibilities for both of various types and price categories. We will highlight some of them soon. Overall, food in Prague is inexpensive, for example, a meal in a restaurant within the city centre is not likely cost more than 5euro(a drink included).

Finally, there is also an option to stay few days after the Summer School ends and travel around Czech Republic together with Christopher Blasdel. Czech shakuhachi players will be your guides.

Re: Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2008 30thAug - 2ndSept

Hello,

today I got a note that Edjun Iechika, a rinzai monk and a skilled shakuhachi player and maker, will take part. This is a very personal thing for me, since it was Edjun whom I first heard playing shakuhachi which led me to pursue it. He also gave me my first shakuhachi - made out of pvc. Although probably not particulary interesting for you lot, I wanted to share this as I am very happy to see him again.

Cheers,

Marek

Kumiko Shuto - biwa soloist will perform along with Kifu Mitsuhashi on Summer School's main concert

Stuart Hinds - renown overtone singer will take part in the concert which also incorporate contemporary dance and the shakuhachi, www.stuarthinds.com

Ejun Iechika - a rinzai monk and shakuhachi player will reflect on his shakuhachi study experience(in a temple) and practice in one of the lectures. Re: Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2008 30thAug - 2ndSept

Hi,

probably some of you have noticed that on the application form we ask you to send money for the Prague Shakuhachi Summer School Scholarship so that students without suffiecient funds may join in.
Due to your generosity we can already state that we have enough funds to support at least one place from this scholarship(of course we participate on the funding). Therefore you are welcome to send in applications for this scholarship, letters of recommendation will be appreciated but not neccesary.

See you in Prague,

Marek
