Mujitsu and Tairaku's Shakuhachi BBQ

Has anyone ever tried smoking bamboo? (No not in your hash pipe.) Does anyone know how to do this properly?

I gave it a try.  See photo.  The result was I pulled out the bamboo culm and it was covered in droplets of sticky brown tar.  I washed the gunk off my bamboo.  I guess I am supposed to let it absorb into the wood, thus it would darken it and give it that strong smoky smell.  I just couldn't bare having all that gunky tar soaked into a future shakuhachi!




If anyone else tries this, let us know how it goes for you...

Note: without the aluminum foil on top, the wood chips at the base burn too hot and the bamboo starts to burn.
