I guess starting a thread about what other hobbies shakuhachi players have is a good excuse to show off mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J6o4e4eHDw

That is great!!
I am learning something similar, but I am using Wave Board or Freeline skates. I don't have any videos of me, but there are plenty of others on YouTube

Cool skating. Chess (playing the occasional game on the Net), aikido, and jodo - in August went on a pilgrimage to Mt Homan in Kyushu where the jojutsu's founder Muso Gonnosuke supposedly was inspired to fashion the jo from a bo after being defeated in a match by Miyamoto Musashi and his two swords.

Yes, nice skating. Our kids and I are looking forward to ice skating again this winter; they did it for the first time last winter, and I hadn't done it since I was a kid. They're also excited about cross-country skiing. In the summer we take a lot of bike rides. My interest in shakuhachi is largely responsible for my renewed interest in cardiovascular fitness.
I practice martial arts, not as often as I'd like; my preference is Aikido, but I have to travel for that, so I usually don't get to more than a couple classes a month. I enjoy weapons especially. I do some yoga, which I find very helpful in developing attention to breathing and posture.

I should've mentioned martial arts and yoga too... but after 25 years this is not what I do, this is how I live... It was martial art and meditation that lead me to shakuhachi in the first place.

hey yu-jin that sounds like me, I practice/live Martial Arts ( Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu/kendo, karate, and Jojutsu) which lead to the way of zen buddhism and meditation which lead me to shakuhachi.

....and would you do a little unicycling now and then, perchance?! :-)

Is the Dharma a hobby.
Actually, I just got a new camera and am delving into photography, mostly because I came to realization that I can't really draw that well.
I also enjoy writing poetry, although it has been a while since I was inspired enough to write anything that wasn't an exercise in narcisism or necromancy.

narcissism and necromany. That is one of the better descriptions I've heard. I also have an interest in writing. here is a little sample that was recently published.

For the moment I am spending all my time with shakuhachi. However, there are many wonderful arts here in Japan which I would love to study if I have the time. I have had the chance to study biwa and kyudo, and I can say that they both had very positive influences on my shakuhachi playing.

Tea Ceremony, Gongfucha, Go, Shodo, writing and reading haiku/tanka, following NHK continuing 15-minute daily morning doramas, Taijiquan/chinese swordsmanship (not a hobby, as i teach it, but a non-shakuhachi pursuit), Tea generally......typical cluster of east-asian arts.

Hi All, Shakuhachi used to be my hobby when I was a full time performer. Now performing is my hobby
I also love photography. Today's repair.

Always great photos from you Perry!
I compose music, perform (folk woodwinds, piano/organ, electronics and percussion), sound design (mostly theater), and make instruments (flutes (some shakuhachi work), and hichiriki, right now). In short, my hobby is musicking. I also research the ecology of non-written forms of cultural information- particularly that of Native American cultures- being in the SW of the United States also gives me a good excuse to hunt down ancient ruins, petroglyphs and pictographs.

Everyone's activities look really cool. Radiogn0me, I'm a terrible roller skater, but I do occasionally get dragged to a rink. It's fun. Nice recumbent bike, airin. I have an electric commuter bike (see below) which does double as a recreational bike on occasion.
I do a fair amount of acoustic guitar strumming and singing with my wife...covers at the moment, but I'm thinking of 'putting the band back together', at least with a hand percussionist. I had to quit the rock band scene to focus on my biggest hobby, which I hope to turn into a career: writing music for movies. My stuff is here: ericsantiestevan.com. It's a lot of fun to be a music chameleon; I have to write a hip hop song very soon!
Shakuhachi grew out of a desire to learn many an instrument (very helpful when you have to potentially write in many genres, and gets you away from the synthesizer and sequencer), and thus I do dabble on other wind and string instruments, but between music writing, strummin' and pickin', and blowing the ol' blowstick everywhere I go, my hobby time is full.
Other activities include a struggling native plant garden in our little backyard, cooking tasty vegetarian meals, and commuting to work on my electric bike when I feel up to it. The motor helps me pedal over the hills, but it's still a 20 mile round trip slog. I wish I had more time for outdoorsy stuff like hiking, backpacking, and now that it's getting to the right time of year, snowboarding, but shakuhachi and writing music are busy things!
