Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos awarded Dai Shihan

It is my pleasure to announce that Alcvin Ramos was recently awarded a Dai Shihan (grand master) license and title from Yoshinobu Ryudo Taniguchi. Alcvin has taken the new name "Ryuzen" (Dragon Meditation.) He the first Canadian and one of only a handful of non-Japanese to receive this esteemed honor.

The Dai Shihan is a worthy recognition for Alcvin's high level of study, performance, and contribution to the shakuhachi and to Japanese music. This is exciting news not only for all of Alcvin's students like myself, but for Canada and for the shakuhachi community.

Born and trained in Japan, Alcvin received his Shihan (masters) license in 2001 from Katsuya Yokoyama and Kaoru Kakizakai. Alcvin has also studied jinashi shakuhachi playing intensively with Atsuya Okuda of the Zensabo, and shakuhachi construction techniques with Shugetsu Yamaguchi.
