Looking for a teacher (or visiting teachers) in Florida

New to Shakuhachi, looking for a local teacher/helper or if you teach and visit, do drop me a line as well. I'm located in the Boca Raton area however will travel for lessons.

Thanks in advance,

Sahar

Re: Looking for a teacher (or visiting teachers) in Florida

I can't say enough good things about online webcam lessons with Michael Chikuzen Gould.  I have had one on one lessons with quite a few teachers and the webcam lessons are as good as one on ones IMHO.  The only "downfall" is that you can't play at the same time.  To me that is beneficial so I can listen to the details of a line that Michael is playing instead of just playing along with him and missing what is really going on.  He also provides recordings of all the pieces with the lesson books that you can play along with if you are so inclined (and hopefully are).  I am in FL also and have been with Michael for weekly online lessons and quarterly RO camps for about six months.  I have made great leaps in that time and Michael believes in helping you truly grasp the pieces and their meaning.  I hope you try at least one lesson with him because I sat stagnant in FL wishing for a teacher for too long also only to be missing the great learning opportunity that awaited me every Tuesday, right in my own office.

Alas Sahar, this is a topic which has been brought up many times by many people.

When is somebody going to move to Florida and teach!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

There's an opening here for an ambitious person. wink

Hi Brian,

I'm going to take my first lesson with Michael this coming Friday.

Tairaku - I looked it up before asking and saw a bunch of such requests. There's definitely an opportunity here for a local instructor.

Cheers

Re: Looking for a teacher (or visiting teachers) in Florida

Like BrianP and yourself, I don't have any teachers in my neighborhood (Taiwan). I've been studying with Michael, as well... now for a year and a half. I'm sure there are some other benefits to in-person lessons in addition to what Brian mentioned (e.g. having more intimate suggestions on difficult techniques). Nevertheless, Michael is certainly worth the time and money.

Re: Looking for a teacher (or visiting teachers) in Florida

I thought I'd share a little research I just did. I trust Chikuzen is a great teacher and has all the logistics of online lessons worked out, but there are other options out there too. I found a post from Nyokai where he says that Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin, Alcvin Ramos, and himself (Nyokai) also teach online lessons. For those late shoppers some lessons probably would make for some nice holiday gifts...

There was a piece I really wanted to learn which my Chikuzen didn't teach (Betsuden Echigo Sanya). Since Nyokai is a Meian teacher, I contacted him to doing a two-shot lesson to learn the piece (also on Skype). I can also vouch that Nyokai is an excellent teacher.

Zakarius, Was just listening to Nyokai's music online (on his site), it's beautiful and peaceful. The tips he provides on the site also seems to shed some more light on Shakuhachi, especially from a beginner's perspective.

Cheers

Zak, I thought there are a lot of players in Taiwan? Isn't there also a forum like this one?

Sorry to derail your thread like this, Sahar...

Uhh... I live in the third largest city located near the center of the island with no shakuhachi players to speak of. The two biggest cities (Taipei and Kaoshiung) have some players but they generally don't play honkyoku. The Taiwanese shakuhachi forum didn't have much in the means of activity (mostly mainland participants trading minyo & Chinese folk sheet music and a handful of shakuhachi sales [all under US$100]). It's apparently dead now:

尺八交流道論壇自2008.8.18停止使用. -- trans: the shakuhachi interchange forum has not been used since Aug. 8th, 2008.

So I'm kind of all alone on this huge island sad

That forum was closed, because of some reason.
And then, they have another forum.
