I've been using a plastic shrunken head as an utaguchi cover. There is a guy on ebay who sells leather ones that look very real but I don't know if they can be modified to stick on the end of a shakuhachi.

I call it my Screamin Jay Hawkins Hocchiku.

A while back I was searching google images for how people attach microphones to their shakuhachi.  A friend also sent me a link to this page just recently, and I had to share it.
