About Inoue Shigeshi multipart shakuhachi

Hi,

I have recently purchased a multipart shakuhachi from James Nyoraku Schlefer. I am extremely pleased with it, it is very responsive and well tuned, and I find it wonderfully easy to play. I was not actually expecting such quality for the price! This shakuhachi was made by Inoue Shigeshi, though there is no hanko on the flute, and as far as I know this maker unfortunately passed away. Does anybody know if he had a successor, and if such shakuhachi are still made? Mine has 4 bodies ranging from 1.7 to 2.0, I'd very much like to have another one for lower pitches, 2.1 to 2.4 would be great.

Best regards,
Nicolas

This is what you're talking about. It is made from bamboo composite material. Inoue Sensei has no direct successor although Kiyoshi Kudo learned from him and makes excellent shakuhachi. This set has been off the market for a long time, you're lucky to have found it. I have one and John Singer has one otherwise I don't know of any. Nobody is making anything similar at the moment, in any lengths.

Re: About Inoue Shigeshi multipart shakuhachi

Hi,

That's the same set I have, except I have no case. Mine has a lot of bindings because when I first received it it was badly cracked on all segments... fortunately James Schelefer was very reactive and attentionate, and Perry Yung repaired it for me. But what you wait a long time for you get to appreciate even more, and I'm so happy with this flute I believe the wait was well worth it!

I would really like that someone would make similar instruments.

Cheers,
Nicolas

The 2.0 is the best length in this set. It's good for Nezasaha.
