I know their bending makes the shakuhachi look bigger, but that longest one is probably close to a 4.something:

Ha! That is funny! The picture was taken for the graduate concert at Mills College, California, USA in 2005. The concert was more for the composition students, but I did a piece called Herba Viva. Aki who is beside me did a video to it only with footage of jellyfish and bamboo (I have an obsession with these two things. I also wanted snails in the video but dry California was not the best place for snails). The huge pieces of bamboo are instruments I played in Herba Viva. They have no tone holes but have a shakuhachi mouth piece. It is only possible to ride the overtones... which is fun and then all the noise sounds that is amplified much more because of the length of the tube. Oh, in fact what made me compose this piece was that I had finally found a way to record the sound of a bamboo sucking up water from the ground. The piece was based on that sound - it felt very earthy somehow and very nurturing too.
I hadn't thought about this piece for a long time. A little nostalgic to see. Thanks, radi0gnome!

This can't be shakuhachi. They look like they're having fun. That is not permitted.
