"Honshirabe" literally means "basic melody". The technical and mental approaches to this piece represent the basic building blocks of shakuhachi honkyoku. It is said that some monks played this song their entire lives as part of a Buddhist training aimed at squeezing everything possible out of it and themselves. Of course, this does not mean that they were continually playing, but, more significantly, that they were "living" shakuhachi as a spiritual discipline.

Re: Honshirabe - Rodrigo Rodriguez

Hi Rodrigo,

I second what christopher said.  My own feeble attempts at honshirabe (something I can't play all the way through yet) sound far less soothing.

Where I'm from would take too long and would bore people.  Where I'm at now, won't take long to explain, but will almost certainly induce fits of yawning.

I'm living in a place called Gatineau, near Ottawa, the capital of Canada.  The place is flat, green, and full of french-canadian red necks.  It's not too bad but for the fact that it seems designed wholly for car driving people.  Many of the streets do not even have pavements.  Otherwise, it is not a bad place.  Lots of woodsy spots to go practice shakuhachi close to nature.  So far as I know I am the only player in Gatineau.  Attempts to find other players in Ottawa have met  with failure, though I suppose there could be some lurking about that are not on the forum here.

Anyways, back to the music, please do post more of it.  I liked it very much.  Kyorei or Tamuke would be nice, but I'm not picky.  Keep up the good stuff.

Hello Lorka,
