Green bamboo

I helped a friend clear cut some bamboo last month. For fun, thought I'd work an uncured piece to see how it behaves. I'll keep you posted!

Re: Green bamboo

Thanks for the inspiration, Ken!     I'm driving to the hobby shop this minute and I'm gonna paint my Yuu in model car lacquer to match that bamboo green in your photos!!!!!   I believe the Japanese brand Tamiya makes that green in the teeny 1 oz.? bottles.        Clinton Moy

No news to report yet. It's hanging in there!

Re: Green bamboo

I've always wondered how that would go. It will be interesting to observe how the dynamics change as the organic material changes. I have one very eccentric hotchiku flute that changes so much with temperature and humidity that it is almost like playing a different flute from week to week (this is in contrast to other very raw flutes I have that change somewhat but not to that degree), it is one of my favorite instruments because it is almost alive (and I love how it sounds).

This one you have is literally still alive, how the "mortification" process effects its sound and playing will be interesting!

At the moment, the sound seems pretty typical of any long, cylindrical bore shakuhachi, green or cured. Quick, short lived attack, breathy, etc. It's a quick, crude exercise to see if, or how long it takes to pop.

One three inch crack developed about three or four months ago.

Re: Green bamboo

Oh. Well you figured it would probably crack.

Re: Green bamboo

I'm not sure I've seen cracks starting right on nodes all that often. Was that just because it was green bamboo?

Re: Green bamboo

what i read on: Kinko Shakuhachi: One Makers Approach by Elmer Takeo Kudo

The maker says (sorry i forgot his name atm) that he uses only fully cured and dry bamboo to work on not to prevent cracks but because the bamboo shrinks as it loses moisture the tone of the flute changes and then it goes out of tune...

Re: Green bamboo

i 've worked on some green bamboo, only 1 piece cracked at the node and right after the night, others cracked at the finger holes, but not complete all the thickness, all of them change the harmonic and picth drastically, some better, some worse.
