I recommend a visit to the website of Kinya Sogawa, a fine shakuhachi maker and performer in Tokyo.
One of his pages shows his shakuhachi 'collection', finished instruments of beauty and interest (usually not for sale...). Click on the thumbnail pics for enlargements, and commence drooling:

The rest of his website is also worth a perusal, particularly 'Shakuhachi Anecdotes':

Beautiful instruments!
Strong wabi sabi aesthetic there, I think.

For those interested, some worthy meditations on the concept/origins of wabi sabi:

Isn't it amazing, how many good looking Shakuhachi are out there??! Those are some very nice flutes. I especially like mottled bamboo myself. But, even in the simplest of forms, it still is a beautiful and graceful instrument. I guess it helps if you know how nice they can sound, and wonder how it would be to play the ones in the pictures!
I just got done drooling over Mujitsu's (Ken LaCosse) flutes today-I like his style a lot!

Oh, and Ed, thanks for the links about Wabi Sabi-very interesting in how it is described, and interpreted. I am in congruence with many aspects of it! Especially the Wabi idea of abandoning society and living as a monk (with my Shakuhachi of course). Smile!

Ken had a flute that I just about cried over (especially when it got sold), it was so beautiful. Ken, if you see this, can you pretty please post pics of that 1.9 that I loved so much? Thanks.
