we need a live chat function!
Just a wee thought. Sometimes, often times, I see people online here and I think to myself: "Self, I'd like to talk with that person right now."
I wonder what that would do to bandwidth and other expenses?

I imagine that there could be something like a skype connection for registered people concurrently online to make an easy connect with. In that way, there would be no relationship to bandwidth here.

I had seen something on another forum, there is a chatroom that just links to a irc channel (so you enter the irc via webbrowser when you logged in into the forum), maybe this is the easyer way but I dont know if PunBB supports that kind of stuff...

IRC was tried from here a few years back - I suspect the moderators just ended up taking carp with random wierdos.

Skype won't allow for multiple person discussions, I don't think.
It looks like Dust's link works well. I even chatted with Chris some. He showed me that I can change the cryptic name it gave me to something more personable by typing /nick radi0gnome

in the Channel before you login.. so that you get to the right chatroom which is #BBQ
if you do find yourself in the wrong chatroom you can join #BBQ by typing
/join #BBQ

We tried something like that a few years ago within PunBB. Unfortunately spammers infiltrated to the point my server shut everything down. So, it was deleted.

At least with the chat, if you say anything dumb, it's very impermanent, unless someone went through the extra steps of capturing it... and then unethically publishing it (that happened on the didjeridu email list in the late '90's, it wasn't a chat, but it can happen). It loans itself to a more conversational style of communicating.
