Dear all
I just want to announce that the European Shakuhachi Summer School ... or as some call it European Shakuhachi Festival will be held 28 - 31 July in London, UK.
We still haven't got all the details down, but we will certainly have jinashi shakuhachi making taught by Chiku Za (a.k.a. Kodama) and a focus on min'yo shakuhachi playing - among others. Min'yo shakuhachi is the biggest group in Japan but very little known outside of that country, so I think it would be nice to introduce it to Europe. It is great fun to play min'yo.... well especially if you have a singer. We will have singers.

I've just heard this from Michael, I'll be there with bells on!

Great! It will be nice to see you again!
Yes indeed, it is again the duo Michael Soumei Coxall and I who are the main organisers. We will be helped by Adrian Bain as well.
Hope many can come!

I will also, having tragically missed both Leiden and Prague, attend this year. Jam, look forward to seeing you there. Kiku, if there's any menial task I can do to help with arrangements from this end, please don't hesitate to drop a mail.

Great, I was just thinking I need to check the dates for this event as summer is allready being planned.
I'll come, and might also be available to come a few days earlier to help in any practical tasks.
Can we come with a wishlist for people we would like to be invited as teachers?

Heeey... what a great Scandinavian team we have here! Thanks Niklas and Jarle.
I am suer we will need some hands. I'll let you know!
Jarle, a wish list is fine - send it over. Perhaps it is better you email it to me directly. We can probably not do much for this year... but we could take the participants' wishes in mind for later events for sure.
Nice people, these shakuhachi fellas!

Apart from Chiku Za (Kodama) teaching jinashi shakuhachi making, the min'yo player who will teach at the ESS Summer School will be Endō Yoshihiro. He is a great min'yo player and the kindest man ever!
We will surely have fun!!!

Oh I hope I can be there. I would love to meet Chiku Za in person. I have heard him playing on youtube and it was awesome for me the other names are new to me but sounds great as well.

I know another 2 people here in Oxford who seem very keen to come. Things are coming together quickly! Should be a great long weekend

as you already know the European Shakuhachi Summer School will focus on min'yo and shakuhachi making. We will also have Demachi Hazuki teaching how to play enka music on shakuhachi. She is a Chikumeisha player and will also teach ensemble or honkyoku. But I am myself looking forward to her enka lessons!

I've never played Enka before, I'm quite excited to hear something different

Our website should be up within a few weeks. It will be held at SOAS, University of London where both Michael Soumei Coxall and I are affiliated. It will be part of SOAS Music Summer School.
Info is still not up but here are the links:

For accommodation we usually recommend the SOAS Hall of residence for students.
Link is here:

For SOAS:

There are also a lot of bed & breakfast around if you prefer that to student housing (ensuite single rooms). Let me know if you need more info.

It is a slow and long process to organise a big shakuhachi event - as many of you know.
But we are getting there...
Here is the beginning of the website for the ESS Shakuhachi Summer School 2011. Not all information is up there at all... but slowly things will be added.
Keep an eye with us:

Dear all
The website for the European Shakuhachi Summer School - also sometimes called the European Shakuhachi Festival is finished in English. The schedule and info on all the teachers and assistants are up. Have a look around:
www.shakuhachisummer-soas.com
I am sure it will be a great event! With the min'yō as focus it will be a big fun party! And I hope many will take with them home their own jinashi shakuhachi made at the workshop with Kodama!
Lots of other stuff too, of course: Sankyoku, shinkyoku, honkyoku, enka, advice on daily practice, workshop on the spiritual aspect of shakuhachi player and much more!
The only thing that is still not working is the booking. The booking for the summer school will happen through the university SOAS' website. It will come up soon.
