It would be nice if you could get him to have ago at a shakuhachi, point out that it would be all about accuracy of bore reproduction and that there might be other researchers with Xrays and accurate bore measurements available.
I suspect that the moving parts are a big part of the appeal for their research, although just think of the fun we could have if they produced a few small batches of the same model in different density plastics...
