Hi all!

Hi all!
I come from Italy and I discovered this magic instrument a month ago. Shakuhachi is wonderfull, I love it. I tried to make it on my own but the result is not very impressive, the sound isn't so pure (I will upload the video on youtube if someone is curious!). I know it's hard to work but... I wanted to try smile In this days I'm very engaged to buy one of it on eBay, but I want to be sure to have a good shakuhachi. Any suggestions? smile

Ciao Apparentesistenza, Benvenuto!
What part of Italy are you in? I know a couple of people with traditionally made shakuhachi in Italy, one in Bologna and one in Roma. I can refer you to them if you want to see what one looks and feels like.

Ciao! Perry

Hello Apparentesistenza :-) I am also a beginner, have been playing for a couple of months now and had my first lesson with a professional teacher recently. I looked at different beginner flutes, and after reading lots of people's opinions, decided to get a Shakuhachi Yuu. The Yuu is made from ABS plastic, molded in the same dimensions as a genuine bamboo flute. It has a good range and plays in concert tune for at least 2 octaves (I haven't gotten above Dai-Kan RO yet). It also has a good sound. Here's a clip of me playing the Yuu in the subway tunnels in Sydney Museum meditation 02. I'd be interested to see your video. I also made a couple of PVC flutes but they sound very dull, I'm going to try again soon.

Ciao :-)

@Yungflutes: I wrote you some days ago on youtube, I live very close to Florence smile I know Papi Moreno as seller ( http://www.papimoreno.com/shakuhachi.html ), but the prices of those Shakuhachi are very expensive for me.

@Dun Romin: Thank for your speaking in Italian, but I think is better if everyone speaks in english (I do my best for this wink), so we have no problem of understanding wink Anyway really thank you!

@Danny: really interesting. I'm looking for this on eBay http://cgi.ebay.it/THE-SHAKUHACHI-YUU-S … 4a98773acc but I'm still insecure... I have to think again in this days for this. In particular, the others eBayer doesen't wants to send me a file to know how the shakuhachi sounds (it isn't so difficult make a video and send it, I think!).

I received an Email from Jeff Cairns (first of all I thank you here smile) with this offert http://www.windwheel.com/frames/1.8meizan.html .. well, it seems beautifull but I'm not ready to spend that pretty penny smile

I think all Yuu's will sound the same, unless there's some fault with the flute. They are manufactured to the exact same specifications. No worries smile But maybe you want bamboo.. I would too if I could afford it.

Good luck

Someone sending you a sound file or video of them playing the flute it not useful to indicate how good the instrument is. A very good player can make a mediocre shakuhachi sound pretty good, whereas a mediocre player cannot make even a great shakuhachi sound good. Waste of time.

Even though the shakuhachi from Jeff Cairns may be more than you want to pay, he is an experienced and competent player (and has recorded some very fine albums to prove it), has lived in Japan for many years, knows how to evaluate and select good shakuhachi, and sells them for very good prices. No one on this forum who has bought a shakuhachi from Jeff has regretted it, I would venture to say.

FWIW: Get the shakuhachi Yuu--it is a known quantity that will get you started on the right foot. A lot of agonizing over whether to get an eBay flute that may be junk (you are not yet experienced enough to evaluate its quality yourself...) is also a waste of your time. Save that for when you spend the big bucks for a good bamboo shakuhachi.

I don't check my youtube mail often. Jeff is providing a great service but if Euros is an issue try making a PVC flute.

Yes you're probably right. I think it's also that I couldn't make big enough finger holes and the pitch is a little flat. I only have a hand drill that takes an 8mm maximum size drill bit (that's 0.314 inch), so soon I'm going to buy some new pipe and go to my brother's house to use his power drill. Are there any specs out there for longer PVC shakuhachi? Like maybe a 2.0 or something?

Cheers

You can use an exacto knife, or pen razor knife, and carve the holes bigger relatively easily.
Using the same internal diameter piece of tubing for a 1.8 (3/4") will give you a narrow bore for a 2.0. It would still work though. In the US, the next ID size up is 1". For me, the best lengths are 2.6 - 2.8.

Have fun!
