What part of Italy are you in? I know a couple of people with traditionally made shakuhachi in Italy, one in Bologna and one in Roma. I can refer you to them if you want to see what one looks and feels like.

Hello Apparentesistenza :-) I am also a beginner, have been playing for a couple of months now and had my first lesson with a professional teacher recently. I looked at different beginner flutes, and after reading lots of people's opinions, decided to get a Shakuhachi Yuu. The Yuu is made from ABS plastic, molded in the same dimensions as a genuine bamboo flute. It has a good range and plays in concert tune for at least 2 octaves (I haven't gotten above Dai-Kan RO yet). It also has a good sound. Here's a clip of me playing the Yuu in the subway tunnels in Sydney Museum meditation 02. I'd be interested to see your video. I also made a couple of PVC flutes but they sound very dull, I'm going to try again soon.

I think all Yuu's will sound the same, unless there's some fault with the flute. They are manufactured to the exact same specifications. No worries But maybe you want bamboo.. I would too if I could afford it.

Yes you're probably right. I think it's also that I couldn't make big enough finger holes and the pitch is a little flat. I only have a hand drill that takes an 8mm maximum size drill bit (that's 0.314 inch), so soon I'm going to buy some new pipe and go to my brother's house to use his power drill. Are there any specs out there for longer PVC shakuhachi? Like maybe a 2.0 or something?

You can use an exacto knife, or pen razor knife, and carve the holes bigger relatively easily.
Using the same internal diameter piece of tubing for a 1.8 (3/4") will give you a narrow bore for a 2.0. It would still work though. In the US, the next ID size up is 1". For me, the best lengths are 2.6 - 2.8.
