Hi All, New York City Ballet is celebrating Jerome Robbins! They are presenting a revival of Watermill on May 2,3 and 8 2008.
Watermill was composed by visionary modern composer and musician Teiji Ito in 1972. It features the shakuhachi along with natural and ceremonial instruments such as bowls, wood blocks and stones. It is one of my favorite ballets and unlike anything I had ever seen from Robbins. You can read about how the music was composed here:http://www.nycballet.com/company/rep.html?rep=218
I saw this piece around 1997 with Genji Ito and Yukio Tsuji on shakuhachi. This revival features Ralph Samuelson. For those who love ballet and shakuhachi (I know you're out there), this is a performance not to be missed.

See you at the ballet! Perry

Hi All, I made it a point to see one of the performances of Watermill last week. The music was fantastic to say the least. The first time I saw it was over 10 years ago and that performance left an indelible mark of inspiration on me. So, I felt a little trepidation as I value that memory and didn't want to tarnish it. However, the performance last week did more than rekindled fond memories. It was treated to an evening of rich, sensual evocative and virtuosic music. I was re inspired by the depth of these seasoned musicians.
The players:
Tevia Ito - percussions
Ralph Samuelson - shakuhachi
Yukio Tsuji - shakuhachi, and assorted instruments.
Mara Purl - Koto
Zishan Ugurlu - Sheng
Steve Gorn - Bansuri
Interestingly enough for me, I found that the choreography and dancing did not meet the depth of the music this time around. But, that didn't matter as the music blew my socks off. If you are interested in hearing some first rate musicians, don't miss the last show tonight. It will be well worth it.
Namaste, Perry
