"Shakuhachi and surfing go together surprisingly well"

Allegedly non-Photoshopped photo of John Kaizan Neptune playing on a surfboard:

[Is it cool to direct-link to images like that? I assume a mod will delete it if not...]

Accompanying article is here:

The photo is apparently called "Nami no ue consaato" (Concert on the waves) and is posted in the lobby of Kamogawa City Hall.

Quick-and-dirty translation from the article:

The photograph was taken by a friend of Neptune's, on the beach at Wada in Minamibōsō City [in Chiba]. Neptune went out with the shakuhachi in his belt like a wakizashi, then swiftly drew it and began to play after catching a wave. Capturing Neptune sitting seiza on the surfboard, the photograph clearly communicates his insistence on the importance of tradition.

"A shakuhachi reverberation that is one with the sound of the waves": a new challenge for Neptune, whose performances bridge East and West, new and old. Locals who saw the photo were charmed, saying "Shakuhachi and surfing go together surprisingly well."

Neptune: "Balancing was the hard part. I look forward to trying this next time on the beach at Kamogawa, where I have lived since 1983."

[Most admins take a dim view of 'hot-linking', as it uses their bandwidth, for which they must pay, and you do not, so it may be deleted, or even have a lovely goatse substituted for it smile ]

I don't read Japanese, so I can't decipher the linked article, but John moved to Hawaii in the 70's to take an undergraduate degree in ethnomusicology, and, mostly, to surf. Along the way, he heard the shakuhachi, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Zen is not easy.
It takes effort to attain nothingness.
And then what do you have?
Bupkes.

Re: "Shakuhachi and surfing go together surprisingly well"

(I'm pretty sure the Sankei Shinbun isn't going to replace it with goatse, although it might disappear... I've found that various forums have their own rules about hotlinking, some quite complex ["nothing from personal sites, corporate media is OK", etc.]. From the other end, people hotlink to my stuff in forums quite often and it doesn't really bother me, especially if they link back. Maybe it'd be an idea to throw this in the Rules? OK, enough derailing)

The article mentions that he's been surfing for 46 years "which is 10 years longer than even his shakuhachi-playing career".

Thanks for the heads up Matt. It's probably not a big deal in this case, but if we allow hot-linking, there is always the chance that we could run into a problem down the line with other photos. Hot-linked photos can also be changed at any time so that could cause confusion on the forum. It's also something that many consider unfair. We get some traffic here so I think it's best that we honor that and avoid hot-linking.

I've gone ahead and downloaded the photo and loaded it on my website. So, no worries! We won't be surprised with an offensive image!
