Hanko data base

Greetings All,
I've been compiling a meager db of maker's hanko found on shakuhachi along with what ever data I can find.  I'd like to beef up the list if possible and am calling on any of you who might be willing to contribute.  My intention is to make the db available to all.  I know many have at times wondered what the hanko on their shakuhachi read and I hope this db will facilitate those inquiring minds.
If you are willing and interested to contribute, please take the best digital photo you can of the hanko you would like to submit along with any data that you might happen to have and send it to me at:
shaku8 (at mark) windwheel(dot)com.  I will give information soon as to where and how this db will be viewable.
cheers!
Jeff

Re: Hanko data base

Hi Jeff,

This is a good idea, but you should know that there exists in Japanese a huge reference work with almost all 20th century makers. Occasionally I would bring flutes to Meijiro to be identified and they would pull out a huge volume and look it up. It apparently also contains more than names, since Miura-san would proceed to tell me about the maker's reputation. Of course all this is contingent on being able to read Japanese and being able to read the hanko, so I fully support your effort.

Re: Hanko data base

Hi Toby,
I wasn't aware of that reference work and I will certainly get in touch with Miura-san.  However, like myself, reading Japanese is a huge effort and it would be great to have an accessible data base online that we non-Japanese readers could search and add to.  I'm actually thinking of doing it like a Wiki if that's possible to get it more into the open source environment.  But before that, I'll just try to build it up as I can with the help of any of you who might be willing to send digital photos of your shakuhachi's hankos with whatever information you might know about them.  At this point, since putting up the first post, nobody has sent anything.  Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks this might be worth while.    neutral

If you are willing, please send photos and details to My e-mail address
