Araki Chikuo is regarded by many as the most important shakuhachi figure since the Edo period. He was the 6th Grandmaster of Kinko-ryu, a komuso of the Edo period in Ichigetsu-ji. When the Meiji government were in the midst of deciding to ban shakuhachi completely, he, along with Yoshida Itcho, petitioned the government, persuading them that shakuhachi can be used in secular music and is valuable as such. It was due to their persuasion that shakuhachi was allowed as an instrument, and so thanks to them that shakuhachi has survived.
Araki Chikuo died in 1908, so last month Araki Kodo V held a party in remembrance of this great master. Araki Kodo V is the current lineage holder and great grandson of Araki Chikuo.
It was my honour to host the party. There were about 22 people, from many different lineages. It was very moving to see these diverse people all together and paying their respects to Chikuo. I hope to write more for the European and Australian newsletters, so you may be able to find more details their when they come out.

My partner and I did not have time to take many pictures as we were kept busy, but here is one at least.
Araki-sensei and I playing the duet "Toumu", composed by Araki-sensei about "A lady putting on makeup getting ready to go on a journey in search of Fuke".

For a visual understanding of Araki Chikuo's lineage, you can see the Kinko-ryu lineage chart on my website, on the "Lineage" page:

We are hoping to put up pictures of the party on the Kodokai website some time soon. I'll post here if that happens.
