Although my shakuhachi is well protected, somehow a dime sized "goo" appears on the inside. It seems to have come through one of the finger holes. What safe cleaning fluid can I use to clean the interior of this goo? Many thanks, Richard

I would start with a dampened shakuhachi cleaning cloth (tsuyutoshi): Pull it through several times, and see what happens to the 'goo'.
Also good, for cleaning the inside of the offending soundhole, is a repeated applications of a dampened cue-tip.
If this doesn't budge the goo, try some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol (70%, normal drug store variety). Can't do any harm, and it might do the job. Dampened, not dripping is best. Cue-tip same-same.
Try 'em, and report the results: other benign solvents are available, but harder to procure.
(Sure you haven't been eating jelly beans just prior to playing?)

Edosan: with thanks for your reply. Used the rubbing alcohol to meticulously remove the goo. Took some moments but the solution worked: the lacquer is smooth and shiny and the sound is as good as ever. Again, thanks, RDU
