Chikuzen Spring Ro camp at Canton Cutural Center

I'm excited to announce the Spring Chikuzen RO Camp will be April 17~19 at the Cultural Center for the Arts in Canton, Ohio. I say excited because currently, at the Canton Art Museum, which is housed inside the cultural center is the amazing exhibition of Itchiku Kubota, the Living National Treasure who did his work using the lost dyeing techniques of the 17th century. This is truly a once in a lifetime chance to see something like this outside of Japan. Everyone who has seen this talks of getting goose bumps the first time they look at one of his kimonos. And also of having to leave the exhibit for a while as it's overwhelming and breath taking. Please check it out at www.kimonoexhibit.com., even though the website doesn't do justice to the real works. And don't make the mistake of thinking that this is a kimono exhibit. Oversized kimonos were his palette. Even if you can't make camp, I urge you to see this exhibit. It runs till April 26.

For the camp we will be using the Cable Recital Hall inside the center. There's a kitchen right next to it for cooking and another room adjoining the other side of the hall so we can break up into two groups. Lodging will be 1 mile down the road at the McKinley Hotel.

Details:

When: April 17~19. 2009

Where: Canton Cultural Center for the Arts.  1001 Market Ave North. Canton, OH 44702

Airport: The Akron/Canton International Airport is 10 miles away. I can provide transportation to and from the airport. Also, Cleveland Hopkins Airport is on the way out of town going to the cultural center. We can provide transportation.

Lodging: The McKinley Grand Hotel.  Has jacuzzi, pool, exercise room, bar, restaurant. 50 classic cars in the basement too.

What: Lots of shakuhachi. There's always (1)or(2) honkyoku; shinkyoku; sanykyoku; Minyo and many pop folk tunes. I will leave about 10 days open from now for requests then decide what we will study.

Who: All levels accommodated.

How much:  Total amount: $340.  The camp fee is $200.  The hotel will run around $100. total for the two nights. That's with 2 people per room at $50. a night. Including tax. Meals are $30. extra for people coming from out of town.  Exhibit $10.

Special event:  Part of the deal with the center is that I play a 1 hr. concert. If it is during camp days, then camp participants will have the opportunity to participate.

Plese wend in your requests for songs or any additional questions to me at Michael@chikuzenstudios.com or chikuzen@earthlink.net. Or tel.: 313-600-2610.

Re: Chikuzen Spring Ro camp at Canton Cutural Center

I can't say how much I have benefited from these camps.  I have been to the last 3 camps and they get better all the time.  If you get the chance to make one I recommend it.  There is nothing like the one on one learning.

Re: Chikuzen Spring Ro camp at Canton Cutural Center

I second that emotion!!!     Missed two out of three camps regretfully because of work,   but I that one summer camp was an eyeopener,   even as a rank beginner.   Learned tons,  made good friends,  and even got to know Chikuzen Gould and Perry Yung.   Take Perry's flutemaking workshop someday to get to know your flutes better.   It's not just five holes in a tube, even though it is.   For you teacherless people,  there is nothing as frightening as a one on one class in a small room for one hour which seems to last an eternity.  You literally sweat bullets,  at least I did til almost eight months passed and now I am comfortable.  In these flute camps you can learn in a cozy group situation and can play as badly as you want because hopefully your sound will be diffused by the other players also struggling or doing well.    I love Japanese culture and art so this camp sounds like a must do with the added attraction of the kimono exhibit.          As an aside ,  don't be scared by the photo of Brian P in the previous post,   he was the most helpful person I met at the summer camp and forever kept me on track with the sheet music and tips when I was hopelessly lost and confused.   He is a real teddy bear.   Read his blog!   Clinton Moy
