Hi all.
I was happy to receive these photos taken on SOAS Music Day of me playing wandering komuso monk and felt like sharing them here. SOAS Music Department organises this day once a year where students and teachers from the department drag out gamelan, thai ensemble, koras... you name it. It is a wonderful day to wander around both as komuso and as a 'normal' person.
SOAS by the way is abbreviation for School of Oriental and African Studies. We try our best to forget that the word Oriental is in the name of the university. It is a part of University of London ... and ok, I still have to practice how to wear kimono before it sits perfectly....

Hi Kiku,
Don't worry about the Kimono.
You are still the only Shakuhachi player who can still look beautiful disguised as a Komuso!

Hi Henrique,
I played on a Murai jinashi tuned to D. Because the bore is a little wider the length is ca. 1.7. I love this flute!
Hi Ronnie,
I'll be there.... next time I hope you are in town when I pass by!

Nice photos! The tengai suits you. In regard to gamelan, we had a gamelan night here several weeks ago at an outdoor garden in Kochi's Art Museum; it was perhaps the first time that a gamelan group has performed here in Kochi; the leader said they were the most active gamelan group in Japan; one of their two flute players was from Bali. In addition to the short flutes, one of them played a long flute of bamboo, about a 3.0 or so; from a distance it almost looked like a chokan; it had about the same diameter as a standard size shakuhachi but with a difference embouchere and six or seven holes.

when I get around 2 it I will change my photo from sword weilding guy to basket head and then there will be 2 komuso "costume" humans on this thread.
funny thing is I cant decide to use the one with me sitting on a chair in a small room with my legs open and my undies showing while playing notation or the one standing properly on a corner near a garden in tokyo. My teachers "uniform" so It was a wee bit small and very freaken tight though he siad supposed to be tight and made it even tighter. Also had an really old dagger knife in my obi hidden away. that felt cool knowing I had a sharp slender dagger on me while playing peacefull music. Did u also have a dagger on u or just use the flute if needs b...lol also my money collector was a slender black box hanging from a strap around my shoulders with white calligraphy on it, probabaly siad give me money please and thank you.
Komuso outfit is pretty expensive... just the basket for the head is alot of $ for the proper one.
guess i go for the one with my undies showing sitting like an american man with my sensei kneeling at my side playing along... when i get the time to dig it up and reconfigure my image without being made into a dork that can make animals come out of hiding. ps... I luv u hurst
