Kumamoto Shakuhachi Festival
Greetings All,
I'm very happy to announce the First Kumamoto Shakuhachi Festival.
Date: February 14th (Sunday), 2010
Place: Sojo University, Kumamoto Municipal Hall
This is the first all-shakuhachi event in Kumamoto. Although Kumamoto has been the host of the national Hogakku Competition, drawing many excellent players, a shakuhachi-only event hasn't occurred on this scale.
The event will present master-class workshops in Kinko, Tozan, Myoan, Min'nyou and Modern. There will be stalls for shakuhachi and shakuhachi related merchandise sales, an on-going first-touch workshop for abject beginners, an open microphone for anybody to show their stuff, as well as a symposium hosted by a panel of Kumamoto-based, interdisciplinary shakuhachi teachers.
There will be a concert in Sojo's 1400 seat main hall with performances by top players from Kumamoto and elsewhere.
We are in the beginning stages of organizing this event and updates will be posted as things progress.
As an incentive to any interested participants from outside of Japan, the entrance fee for workshops and concert will be waived.
Though it is primarily being presented as a local festival, any participants from outside of Japan will be welcomed and personally assisted.

Thank you all for the well wishes. One of the reasons I'm doing this is to make an attempt to bridge school lines in a comfortable way. Although, I'm not looking to homogenize things. Naturally, this bridging happens often outside of Japan, but it's another issue here. Aside from that, I want to create a vehicle that will serve to expose the general public to a wider understanding of the shakuhachi and its applications. As many of you may know, it has pretty much been shelved by the general public as a relic of the past. I think it's locally time for a change.

Amazing what is happening around regarding shakuhachi! Wish I could be there!

Yeah silly about shakuhachi people segregating by ryu. To the average person all shakuhachi music sounds similar.

True, though that is, it's rather like segregating political ideals. Small variances tend to take on huge proportions in the eyes of those who hold to them. I'm not out to break down ryuha, but just to usher in the idea that we all have something to offer each other...even if just for a day a year. Maybe to chip away at a little of the silliness.
