Hello; I have recently undertaken a research project analyzing Honkyoku music, however I have been unable to find any samples.
Does anyone have an electronic copy of any of the major Honkyoku pieces in Western notation?
I would be indebted - this is quite frustrating.
Thanks.

Surely you jest....
It is difficult enough to communicate what's happening in honkyoku with Japanese notation.
Impossible to convey in Western notation. I'd come up with another topic if I were you.

To expand on edosan a bit. Even with the honkyoku notation there is a lot happening that is not written down and a lot of that is specific to the style you are playing. The notation is a visual reminder and not much else so you would really have to learn the pieces first then analyze latter.

No, actually. I understand that Western notation cannot hope to accurately express this style of music; I'm going to use it as a quick way to illustrate the scales which are utilized to an "uninformed" audience that can't easily read shakuhachi notation.
I have, however, finally found what I was looking for. I appreciate the comments.

That would be a description of the finger that points to the Moon that reflects the Light from the Sun.

There are some transcriptions in Riley Lee's Ph.D. thesis if I recall properly.

Thanks Tairaku, I had missed the image archives on Lee's site.
Also, my avatar is quite appropriate, whoever put that there.

We have an "Avatarbot" which we've installed into the forum software which generates avatars for members who do not have them. So far most people like the ones that it has come up with, but if they don't it's always possible to change it in your profile.
