Fine-tuning a rough ji-nashi 1.8
Calling all makers...
I have just made a rough 1.8. It plays reasonably well, with some very rough and breathy spots and hard-to-reach notes. Now I want to improve it by removing material from the bore. Where do I start, and what tools should I use? I've been making for a few months now, but this is my first attempt at improving the sound by taking material from the bore in addition to removing most of the nodes, which I do as a matter of course.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Here is a basic shakuhachi making tutorial with a section on fine tuning the bore. I hope it helps.
It often helps to leave some of the nodes protruding in the bore. That way, they can be slowly filed in relation to each other, while testing for tone quality. Sometimes they end up getting filed flush. Other times, you might find that the flute has good tone with some of the node(s) protruding.

That is a nifty little shakuhachi primer. A lot of experience squashed neatly into that PDF. I was wondering where you had it stashed; thanks for posting it!
