Looking for a teacher near Spokane, WA
I am looking for a teacher near Spokane, Washington. I have been playing around for 2 months, and would appreciate some direction and guidance.

I also want to find a workshop for making a simple bamboo flute with a natural bore (hocchiku?). Any leads on something coming up in 2011 would be much appreciated!

Nicholas, my experience has been that you don't need a face to face teacher necessarily to start and progress with learning to play the shakuhachi. If you have a webcam and a mic you can benefit hugely from taking lessons via Skype. There are quite a few excellent teachers who offer lessons via skype and some will even let you take the first lesson for free just to try it out.

I'm not sure, but the closest to you might be Alcvin Ramos of Vancouver, who is on this forum. Maybe he circulates around the Pacific NW a bit.

Hey, another former Spokanite here (well,a former Shadle Park grad actually) from Washington State. You might try Larry Tyrrell as he is in Portland and is available too.He has studios in both Portland and Seattle from what I have read.I have emailed him myself for the possibility of lessons too.Here is a link:

You might try James Hunter here . He also lives in Spokane.
He is a kinko-ryu player and member of Wakanakai under Tsurugi Kodo in Kumamoto, Japan and a very nice guy.

Just wanted to chime in and say welcome. I too am a former Spokanite born and raised. Get back there once a year or so. What a beautiful Japanese Garden there (for a small town). I wish you all luck with your shakuhachi adventures.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am going to start Skype lessons with Michael Chikuzen Gould. I have come across several former students of James Hunter's who report that he is not currently offering lessons and got a bounced back when I tried emailing him. I feel good about the Skype lessons, but do wish I could take lessons in person.
It's amazing that so many people on this forum have lived in Spokane!

I have had my first lesson and now don't feel near as bad about Skype lessons! I doubt I could have got more out of a face to face lesson. As I progress this might be less true, but for where I'm at I believe these lessons are a great fit.

Glad your first skype lesson was a success.
Almost two years of skype lessons later and they're still a good fit for me.
