Koto music suggestions?
I dig koto music, but interestingly enough I prefer modern music performed on Koto as opposed to classical Japanese music. (Which is surprising as this is the direct opposite of my taste in Shakuhachi music where I tend to find modern music for shakuhachi not nearly as good as the classics...)
So here is my question:
Right now I am listening to rhapsody for 20 string koto by Reiko Kimura (perfomed not written) and I am enjoying it very much...
Anyone have suggestions on CDs of modern music composed for koto? (Or your favorite classics for koto as well but I am mostly interested in the modern stuff.)

Not to toot my own horn, but my cd, 'Silent Letters, Secret Pens' with Izumi Fujikawa on 20 stringed koto is a good example of modern and traditional. On the cd Izumi (who is a regular player with Aura J, previously Ora-J) plays a solo piece by Danirl Morse, 'Reflection'. We also do as duets, Kai by Saiko Nakamura, Shinonome no Uta by Marty Regan and Through The Leaves written by me. All of these pieces are modern and very good examples of Izumi's skill and sensitivity. You can catch a listen at CD Baby or on my MySpace site <www.myspace.com/cairnsjeff>

I am not sure if you want just solo koto.
But I say give Rin' a try.
They have the koto along with shakuhachi, shamisen, and sometimes biwa.

The Japanese group "Soemon."
Many of the CDs of Kazue Sawai.
Anything by Brett Larner -- including duo with Anthony Braxton.
Yoko Hiraoka's CD "Evanescence."
Ryuko Mizutani for sure, just about anything she does.

I can also recommend Chieko Mori. She studied at the Sawai school, but she is no longer a member and is a very free spirit. She is a great improvisor. We performed together at a new music festival in Lithuania. Listening to her play Sofia Gubaidulina's koto piece is a fantastic experience.

I absolutely adore Michiyo Yagi. I discovered her by accident 10+ years ago when I picked up a handful of Japanese CDs for a buck a piece. That when CD more then made up for the rest of the duds in the stack.

That was just lovely - thanks for posting it.
I recommend the cd "Color" by Mizuyo Komiya. You can sample clips from all its tracks here: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/mus … Color.htm.
(My personal favourites on this recording are Tsugaru Overture, Mebae, and Moegi, but happily, this is one of those (rare?) disks where every track is enjoyable...)
Without music, life would be a mistake.
