It’s that time again!

The Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies is back for its 17th iteration in the beautiful foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

The longest-running event of its kind, Shakuhachi Summer Camp is designed from the ground up to be the most useful, productive, and inspiring experience a shakuhachi player can have. As previous attendees already know, Shakuhachi Camp will directly enhance any shakuhachi player's musical life. Regardless of your level of expertise, you will always come away from Camp with a better sense of direction, more tools to help your playing, new shakuhachi friends, and many, many memories of the amazing community that’s grown up around the Camp over the years.

At the Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies, in addition to special concerts by the faculty, there is an emphasis on total immersion in playing, learning and experiencing the profound world of the shakuhachi, with Honkyoku, Sankyoku, Folk, Modern Improvisation and much, much more.

Participants at Camp will study with some of the greatest masters, learning and practicing pieces and attending lectures and workshops regarding all aspects of shakuhachi theory, history and practice. To whet your appetite, here are a few of the presentations/workshops that are being especially prepared for this year’s Camp:

“Gagaku and the 8th century Gagaku Shakuhachi - the first shakuhachi predecessor to arrive in Japan” and "Beginner Workshop: “Using your muscles effectively; developing correct embouchure and blowing techniques”, with Christopher Yohmei Blasdel

"Hôkyô Kokû/Phoenix Crying in the Empty Sky (鳳叶虚空)", a traditional Myoan honkyoku as taught to Riley Lee by his teacher, Sakai Chikuho II, in Kinko and Chikuho notation

"Tsuru no Sugomori (Nesting Cranes)", the very special Rempoken version of this iconic masterpiece, and
"Two Chinese Folk Songs" on the shakuhachi for beginners: Plum Blossoms & Xiao, with Yôdô Kurahashi.

Miyama-jishi (Tour of Ise Shrine), Kikuoka Kengyô's masterpiece of the jiuta repertiore, and "Music and Visual Arts of the Edo Era, Ômi Hakkei (Eight Views of Lake Biwa), by the woodblock master Hiroshige, put to music by the Yamada style koto master Yamato Manwa", with David Kansuke Wheeler

You are also welcome to join in a variety of extracurricular activities, including Sunrise Robuki, Morning Yoga and Meditation and evening socializing, in a full-tiime celebration of this community.

Beginning students will be provided with their own core curriculum, and all levels—from absolute beginner to advanced—will have the opportunity to study a select number of pieces with great thoroughness and depth.
This year’s faculty includes: Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, Akihisa Kominato (tentative), Yodo Kurahashi, Riley Koho Lee, David Kansuke Wheeler, and, on Shamisen, Koto, and Voice, Yoko Hiraoka.
