Could someone please explain what exactly is meant when a flute is identified as an exemplar of a specific school? For example "Kinko Ryu shakuhachi," "Myoan Ryu shakuhachi," "Tozan Ryu shakuhachi," etc. I've been assuming it indicates something about the flute beyond just the inlay, such as hole sizes, tuning, etc. Is that right? I can't seem to find the information delineated anywhere. I apologize if it is out there and I have missed it.

I've been out of the shakuachi scene for quite a while, just trying to get back into it, so my info may be a little mis-remembered..
I'm not sure, although I have heard that some schools do use different hole sizes, especially on the 3rd hole.
I think though that what you are talking about it just how the flute plays and how it goes with a certain school's style.
Could be way off though..
