Questions about bamboo identification and harvesting

I'm posting this under a different heading...
I live on the southeast coast of North Carolina. Talking to a local bonsai person the other day, I asked about Madake ("timber") bamboo--if any was available around here. He said there was some big wild timber bamboo growing at the edge of a farmer's field about 60 miles from there.
1. Am I right in using the phrase "timber bamboo" to try and explain what I might be looking for?
2. How will I know when I see it if it is good for shakuhachi creation?
3. What would I need to do to transport some back to my place?
4. How do I plant it and then contain it (keep it from taking over my yard)?
Thanks for sharing any of your own experiences, or directing me to resources.
