Duet Night @ Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies

Kind Mina-sama (Ladies & Gentlemen),
My name is Elliot Kallen and I’m a frequent lurker (and sometimes contributor) to the Forum.  I promise to get around to my formal Members Introduction at some point but, in the meantime, I’m on a mission and I figured I’d better address this now rather than later:
Shakucamp is coming!
Yes, the 9th annual Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies will soon be upon us. If you haven’t checked it out yet, shame, shame. Do not pass “go”, do not play “Go”, stop what you’re doing and go to:  http://www.shakucamp.com and see for yourself what it’s all about. In a nutshell, it’s five days of intense shakuhachi immersion, and more fun than you’d think should be legal. It’s something that I, and many other shaku-nauts, look forward to every year.  You should join us!
But, as I said, I’m on a mission: David Wheeler (my teacher and one of the event organizers) has asked me to help with a small part of organizing this years camp, in particular, Duet Night. In anticipation of your question, Duet Night has become something of a tradition at camp. Sunday night, with the harder parts of camp behind us, we gather together to just relax and play. It’s a fun, zero-pressure opportunity to just enjoy each others company and play some music. (Besides, the hot tub won’t hold 30 at a time!)
It’s “Duet Night” because we take songs that were arranged with two (or more) parts to play and divide them up amongst the 30-or-so players who participate. In the past we’ve done Fukuda Rando tunes, honkyoku duets, Gregorian chant, anime themes, folk tunes, pop tunes, and even some jazz standards. (For those of you who are complete beginners, worry not - there are always simpler parts for you to play. Everyone gets to participate who has the desire.)
And that’s where I come in. The senseis are pretty busy getting their lesson schedules and materials together and, frankly, don’t have time to think about Duet Night (or much else, for that matter). Last year that lead to a pretty disorganized night, so I’ve been given the task of pulling this together.
With that in mind, I have two things to put forth:
1. Do you have suggestions for tunes you’d like to do? And...
2. Would you like to try your hand at arranging something for the group to play?
In regards to #1, the piece should be relatively short but, really, pretty much anything goes (Stravinsky might NOT be a good choice!). Familiar stuff is nice, but not required. Just remember that almost half the people playing will be beginners and we want the experience to be inclusive rather than exclusive.
As for #2, aside from the obvious benefits of using this as an exercise toward improving your skills, arranging for shakuhachi ensemble is fun!  Kinko notation is generally preferred, but simple western notation can also be accommodated. Remember that anything with more than five parts gets unwieldy fast.
This year, so far, we’ve got a version of Miles Davis’ “All Blues” and perhaps a cool version of Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” on tap.
If you’ve attended Shakucamp previously, is there any tune you’d like to see repeated from Duet Nights of the past?
We’re limiting the number of tunes to five or six just so we can all get to bed at a more-or-less reasonable time (that may be wishful thinking...).
If you have any other thoughts you’d like to share on the topic, please email me off-line. I’m going to try to have the Duet Night pieces posted to the camp website for attendees within a few weeks.
Thanks for slogging through this,
Elliot

Re: Duet Night @ Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies

The biggest problem with going to the Shakuhachi Summer Camp is that it is at the end of June. Players who happen to be teachers in schools can't attend till after the school closes for the Summer.

Oh well!!!!

Hello Elliot

You might consider some of my duets from the book "Shakuhachi Duets." They are short, and range from beginning to intermediate level in difficulty. Monty has them on www.shakuachi.com.
