playing in stairwells and stages

I have been working in museum/library part time and have been bringing my shakuhachi to work.   I get looks, and sometimes questions.  At first I was a bit shy about it, as I have less than a year of playing under my belt.  After awhile, however, I stopped caring, and pretty much just walk around all over the place with my shakuhachi.

Anyways, today I had the chance to play in a sealed off stairwell and I had a wonderful time.  The echoes filled the space around me with a resonant echo that made the volume jump to a pleasing level... at least to me....

Well during an improvisation on Kyorei (which I am trying to learn still), a security guard came and stopped me as my music had apparently set off some sensors and was causing confusion to the poor security staff.  To my credit at least, he seemed to like the music I was playing.

This is where the ramble gets weird.  I guess the security guard liked my particular madness.  It is not every day they have to go capture a shakuhachi player.  Rather than be mean and tell me to stop, he brought me to a large auditorium area where they put on concerts and said that I could practice there whenever it was not in use (which is most of the time).  I was pretty stoked.  Now I have a real stage to practice on when I'm working there.     Actually I kind of preferred the smelly stiarwell as it was more echoey, but a stage is a pretty damn good second option

Just thought I would share.

Re: playing in stairwells and stages

Once when I was in my college dorm, we had a fire alarm go off and for some strange reason, we were supposed to stay in the fireproof concrete-sealed stairwell instead of go outside. Instead of involve myself in the drivel, I started humming. No one could key in on the source with all of the talking and echoing and I was able to find a few notes which seemed to really resonate. Many people would suddenly start looking around in confusion when I hit some of them. It was quite an experience.

Now, I find that some places have naturally better accoustics and I generally prefer to play in such places. What I find interesting is that some of these rooms are small and others quite large. Can any accoustic experts shine light on this?

I'm not an acoustics expert, (or any other kind of expert, actually), but what you're probably finding is the resonant frequency of the room, or an integer (or integer fraction) multiple thereof. There should be several frequencies available, based on the harmonic series of the previously mentioned frequencies, each with its own distinct "power" level.
